Beschreibung:

The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Berlin, in cooperation with the Lesbian and Gay Association in Germany (LSVD) and Bundesverband Trans* (BVT*), would like to invite you for a panel discussion about gender self-determination. Politicians and representatives from NGOs from Germany and the Netherlands reflect on the current situation and public debate in their respective countries in the run-up to parliamentary discussions about legislative changes.

The German government parties have agreed to abolish the current ‘Transsexual Act’ and adopt a new law for self-determination. This legislation is intended to allow people to change their first name and gender marker through a simple application - without expert opinions or court proceedings. The draft of the legislation is expected soon. A similar discussion is taking place in the Netherlands. Last autumn, a bill to simplify the process for self-determination was discussed in parliament. This has sparked a political and public debate that will continue in the Dutch parliament in April 2023.

In both countries, the legal recognition of trans*, intersex and non-binary people is the subject of intense political and social debate. The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Berlin, in cooperation with the LSVD and BVT*, is therefore offering a podium for a discussion on the situation and experiences from the Netherlands and Germany: What can interest groups and politicians from both countries learn from each other? What needs do trans*, intersex and non-binary people have, and how can the tough public discussion be dealt with?
