For the sixth year in a row HES / LSVS is partnering with ERA, a regional LGBTI association for the Western Balkans and Turkey. With the financial support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany, HES is helping ERA each year in achieving fundamental objectives and needs.

Some of the biggest LGBTI+ research in the Western Balkans region

The ERA network, which since 2015 has grown from 25 to 75 member organizations, is one of the largest in the European region and it focuses strongly on regional and international advocacy, capacity development of its members, public campaigning,  and research. In the last 6 years ERA has partnered with institutions as big as the World Bank, in conducting some of the biggest LGBTI+ research in the Western Balkans region. In the last two years ERA has also spent considerable efforts in addressing specific issues for the LGBTI+ community, including access to justice, access to health and socio-economic rights.

New Strategic Plan 2022-2026 und Online-Konferenz

In 2021 HES is again providing ERA with the much needed support, which this year is even more special, as the network is about to finalize its new Strategic Plan 2022-2026. In this regard, with your support, ERA has been conducting a capacity assessment of its member organizations in relation to resilience and sustainability, has conducted an analysis of networking among LGBTI CSOs in the Western Balkans and Turkey, and later this autumn will conduct a set of trainings on the topics of resilience, sustainability and development.

This autumn ERA will also organize an online regional conference which will focus on resilience and sustainability of the LGBTI+ movement and communities. Specific topics for the region will also be addressed:

  1. responding to the ever-growing anti-gender movement in the Western Balkans and Turkey region,
  2. addressing family rights of same-sex couples and
  3. addressing hate crimes and hate speech in the Western Balkans and Turkey region.

The conference will be accompanied also by ERA’s strategic meeting of its members which will lead to the preparation of the Strategic Plan 2022-2026. Later this year ERA will also hold a regional meeting of government representatives from the Western Balkans region as well as publish two important materials: The Annual Regional LGBTI Index Report for 2021 and “The State of LGBTI organizing in the Western Balkans”.

As part of its advocacy work, HES is supporting ERA also in monitoring the EU integration process from the perspective of rights of LGBTI persons and the environment of LGBTI CSOs development and engagement.
