From the 8th to the 18th June 2021, Victor Madrigal-Borloz, the UN Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, came to Tunisia on an official visit.

This visit aimed to examine how far Tunisia has come in eliminating violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, identify gaps and obstacles, and make suggestions to key parties by meeting with representatives of the executive, legislative and judicial branches, religious leaders and civil society organisations working on issues related to the human rights of LGBTIQ+ people

One of his meetings took place in the office of Mawjoudin, with the presence of active members from our organisation, including refugees and asylum seekers. This was an opportunity for the latter to talk about issues they face during their stay in Tunisia, ranging from racism, homophobia and transphobia and the lack of sustainable plans needed to become independent within the society. They also brought to Victor’s attention, the dangers of the absence of specific laws to protect them as queer refugees in Tunisia, and the asylum and resettlement processes which are lengthy and exhausting.

In June 2022, the expert will deliver his findings and recommendations to the United Nations Human Rights Council.
